Derek Jarman

Derek Jarman (1942 -1994)

So this one has come about when I said that I want to go to the new Derek Jarman exhibition in London, the response obviously was who is Derek Jarman?

I suppose some of the younger members of the LGBT community could be forgiven not knowing one of the UK's first famous contemporary queer artist, but anyone over 40 shouldn't.

Derek was a film director, stage designer, diarist, artist, gardener, author and activist.  As well as being important creatively he was an important voice in British gay politics.

Marking the 20th anniversary death from an AIDS related illness, King's College London, where he was a student, are currently staging an immersive exhibition (until  9 March 2014) of his life and work.

Welcome!

"HAND YOUR GAY CARD BACK!"

Started in 2014 this blog is an irreverent look at gay culture. Entries are triggered when friends exclaim to each other "Hand your gay card back!" Usually signifying that one friend thinks that the other has missed out on some vital bit of gay culture.

This blog is never going to be fully comprehensive, but entry by erratic entry, it will try and write the wrongs of some of our communities shameful lack of knowledge.

The next entry will appear with appropriate subject content when those immortal words are triggered in the company of friends!
